A Brief History of NSChE Foundation

The Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE) Foundation is the brain child of the first “visioning” exercise undertaken by the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers – NSChE’S Vision 2020 project carried out under the leadership of the then National NSChE President, Engr. J. J Akpieyi, FNSChE.

The NSChE Foundation, in addition to providing the NSChE with a stable pool of funds for her projects, was established with the following main objectives:

  1. Creation of a permanent framework to serve as a major contributor to the resource which will make the NSChE a virile professional body in the 21st Century.
  2. Provision of a vehicle for Chemical Engineers and friends of the Foundation to demonstrate their commitment to, and support for the profession and creation of a focal point for Government and multilateral agencies, multinational and corporate bodies and foundations to support projects designed by the NSChE to benefit the chemical process Industry, the academia and the society at large.

These objectives captures the motto of the NSChE Foundation: National Development through Chemical Engineering, which points to the role that Chemical Engineers and the profession of Chemical Engineering must play in the quest for a stable path in national growth and development in Nigeria.

The funds generated by the Foundation are employed for the following:

  • Development of Entrepreneurial capacity in Chemical Engineers; Capacity building in the departments of Chemical Engineering in Nigerian universities; Post-qualification and continuous training of Chemical Process Industry personnel.
  • Development of symbiotic industry/Academia Interfaces.
  • Establishment of the Nigerian Chemical Process Industry data bank.

The NSChE Council on July 10, 1999, approved the establishment of the NSChE Foundation Committee (NFC) for the specific goal of developing the blue print for the creation of the NSChE Foundation. The Committee comprised 15 members (later expanded to 18 members) was led by Dr. T. M. John, FNSChE as Chairman.

After the inauguration of the NFC on August 13, 1999, the committee produced the blue print for the establishment of the NSChE Foundation. The blue-print which technically comprised the Constitution, formed the basis for the registration of the Foundation with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and setting up of the inaugural Board of Trustees. Engr. A.O. Shobo was appointed to serve as the inaugural Chairman of the Foundation; Dr. T. M. John as President, while Dr. J.U. Nwalor was appointed as the substantive Executive Secretary. The members of the inaugural Board of Trustees were sworn in on February 8, 2001. They comprised of the following:

The NSChE Foundation marked its 10th year Anniversary in 2011. This was celebrated by a colourful Dinner and Award ceremony which took place on October 5, 2011, at Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Lagos. The Foundation has lived to its mandate of serving as a major contributor to the resources of the Society and has been positioned to facilitate capacity building in the departments of Chemical Engineering in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
