Engr. (Mrs.) Modupeola Oluremilekun Kasim



Engr. (Mrs.) Modupeola Oluremilekun Kasim won the African Scholarship Programme of American Universities (ASPAU) to study Chemical Engineering at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA. She achieved an unprecedented feat by emerging as the first female Chemical Engineer in Nigeria. She successfully completed her Master of Science Degree (MSc.) in Operations Research in 1975.

Her work experience of about thirty-two years saw her working in quite a number of organizations. She taught mathematics at the prestigious Kings College, Lagos between 1969 and 1971 and then moved on to Nigerian Standards Organization (now Standards Organization of Nigeria) where she worked as a Standards Engineer responsible for the preparation of standards on food and beverages between 1971 and 1973. She had a brief stint at Nigeria Institute of Management, Lagos before joining the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) in 1976 where she spent the bulk of her working life. She rose through the ranks while at the Institute and served in several capacities. Her duties included operational research analysis, process engineering economics and financial analysis, techno-economic feasibility studies, organization of training workshops and exhibitions, technical assistance and consultancy services to public and private clients, project management, budget preparation and periodic returns of capital allocations to Federal Ministry of Planning and Ministry of Science and Technology amongst others. She was the head of different departments while at FIIRO and also has over 50 research and other publications (joint and individual) to her name.  She retired in January 2005 as a Director. She is a devout Christian and belongs to the Anglican Communion and actively involved in various societies. She is also the current president of her alma mater alumni association (May’59).

Engr. (Mrs.) Modupeola Kasim is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChe.), Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers Foundation.
